Little Fears…3rd Edition?

I asked the question over on the Facebook group, but I wanted to get it posted here as well.

Given that a) it would be a ways off yet and b) it would stick to the core concept of “kids fighting monsters”, what would you like to see in a Little Fears 3rd Edition?

Cosmological changes?
Background changes?
Character changes?
Rules changes?

Drop a comment below and tell me what changes or additions would get you excited about a third edition of Little Fears.

Honestly, I think I’m not sure if I’m in the majority here, but I really like the setting of Nightmare Edition better than the original. Don’t get me wrong the original setting is good, but it seems more based on shock value than substance at times. I also really enjoy playing kids who can fight the monster rather than just survive monsters. Maybe I’ve just been with the wrong group, but it seems to make for much better campaigns. I think the rules are pretty solid, with the qualities and abilities being very good. While the simplicity of combat is a draw for me, maybe making it a little bit more fleshed out would be good (e.g. rules for ranged attacks and area of effect) and maybe some more abilities for Stuff (or at least some more examples of “does a cool thing” since I’m often at a loss when creating Stuff.) Overall though I think Nightmare Edition is a pretty solid game. I don’t know if this was helpful, but I really like the game and want to try and help any way I can.

Taking a bit of a classic here “If its not broke, why fix it?” Honestly, I suggest you iron the game out to make sure the wrinkles are cleaned for ease of use, and expand, expand, expand, on all the good that you have created here. Create a Youtube of play examples for audio and visual based learners to get a sample idea of the game, some new art. All the sudden you have reason to expand to a “New Edition”.

  3. Paul Round says:

Given that I’ve already got two editions, not really sure what would make me buy into a 3rd edition if I’m honest. Would love to see a broad campaign style adventure for the current edition or an Arkham Horror style board game adventure instead.

Definitely looking forward to the Campfire Tales collection though, even though I own pretty much all of them as PDFs already 🙂

  4. Andrew says:

Lemme think, other than figuring that I’d at least like to see a return of the Seven Kings in some form in 3rd edition…

From what I can recall vaguely, 1st Edition was Closetland terrors, with most of the villians being not-statted and stated to have passive influence? While 2nd Edition was having them be confrontable. And that’s before we even got blessed with the two expansions on Nightmare edition with the Missing and the Blessed.

Personally, I have a feeling that every GM’s world of ‘Little Fears’ is a bit different. But rambling aside, I’ll see what I can add.

Cosmology wise, other than the setting and mythology probably influencing Western nightmares. What about potential rules for generating alternative culture’s ‘Big Bads/Nightmare Kings’, or ideas on shuffling the cosmology to the GM, but with the insistence that it’s overall the children’s tale to tell.

Background would probably (and should) still be rooted in the modern world. Though maybe you could take notes from children misplaced in time. As for monsters, they could be from Closetland, or spawned from the Dreams/Nightmares of children. And woe before any child who has to contend with an ‘Urban Myth’ of some sort, like Bloody Mary.

Dunno what else for characters and rules I can suggest, least I end up slipping bias from other games I’ve been interested in (such as Darkest Dungeon.) But the only thing I can think of is Innocence/Belief is a key thing in Little Fears.

Innocence was the 1st Edition purity, Belief was the 2nd Edition’s faith. What would 3rd Edition’s ‘childhood’ be, Naívety, Acceptance, trust/faith?

Maybe you could theoretically make potential rules for characters to keep some faith/belief still, but with limitations on how far they can go. And even if they become Adult Priests with a great deal of belief, souls eventually ‘age’ until they are no longer ‘fresh’?

*Sigh* I really think I rambled on for too long. But other than 3rd Edition, how will the gameplay transcend. Will it be via narrative, or potential rules for ‘movement/escape’ scenes, abstract map making advice, est.

And I’ll cut of now, before I end up writing over 10K in rough design ideas.

  5. Leonard says:

In terms of setting, I would like to keep the trend that started with the Nightmare Edition and go even further from Closetland – at least in potential. Don’t get me wrong, I like the idea very much, but I also like the game being more of a generic “kids fight monsters” simulator. I mean, most Goosebumps books don’t have the whole cosmological complication of Belief, or Belief powered keepsakes, or Blindness, or even Souls, most of the time. Each story is mostly standalone, and there aren’t many mystical connections: one time aliens are coming for our brains, the next time it’s a werewolf straight out of German folklore, and after that the television comes to life.

Maybe keep the cosmological elements, but at least give more detailed rules on how the game can run without them? I know it’s technically in Nightmare Edition but in practice, a lot of the mechanics break down if you remove Belief or try to make the monsters “real” (in the sense that they aren’t just powered by Fear and all that).

Basically, “Childhood Beliefs” is a fine basis for *A* cosmology, but it doesn’t suit every single “Childhood Horror” story.

In terms of mechanics, I have to say I liked the older (“Happy Birthday” or “Original”) version better than Nightmare, but I don’t really mind it either way. The system accomplishes what it sets to accomplish, and for the most part, that’s what’s important. Maybe put more thought into balancing the Quality/Stuff system (as it is, there isn’t much of a mechanical incentive to play, say, a wheelchair bound kid – you get the same amount of points for that as you would for having a potty-mouth), but with a system so light that’s probably one of the things that should be just left for the GM to judge. You could sit around all day coming up with crazy ideas for kids you want to build and the system can’t (“I want to be a rich little girl with cancer!”), but it works if everyone around the table just acts like an adult.

As for alternate settings, I don’t object those in principle, so long as they’re kept to the appendix, rather than being the main point of focus. I’m all for medieval kids kidnapped by faeries in the forest or kids in the future fighting evil monster corps but at the end of the day what I really want is Jimmy from the suburbs sneaking around old Ms. Schultz’s house because he suspects she might be a witch.

What else…? Maybe add some “Blessed” like materials to the core book to make up for the mystical elements potentially being less prominent? Psychic kids? Kids with access to a spellbook? The one thing that worries me about the idea is that for some players, it might take over the rest of character creation and then instead of dealing with a gang of plucky kids you just got yourself a demon, a sorcerer and an elf warrior who happen to be nine years old.

  6. Sam(DiploRaptor) says:

What would be the benefits of making a 3rd edition?
Currently the rules seem fairly fun and flexible as is.
It could be cool to have a book of ideas.
Monsters, Allies, GMPC’s, PC’s, and Setting stuff.
Just think that would be fun.
Kind of like that section in the book where it talks about making monsters able to be killed without using belief

As of writing this I think most of us can agree that we enjoy 2nd edition it plays well and is fun. If you want to do anything an errata that limits how dice explode or something then maybe make an errata, or include it in the idea book.

Further you could fill the idea book with ideas you like from fans

  7. Joe Kerr says:

well, i been thinking on how interesting would be to have Historical Settings within Little Fears. The Childrens Crussade, The Kid Miners from South America, The Urchins of the 1920’s etc… would be nice to see rules and setting changes for those concepts.

would be nice to have a more clear idea of the Mythos of little fears (like what was the Demagogue), and such.

It would also be interesting to see a bit of The World of Little Fears, meaning..Are the creatures (the boogeyman, Titania etc..) the same in other cultures such as Asia? or do they change acording to local beliefs?

  8. Joe Kerr says:

I would keep the Demagogue as a figure in constant war against The Boogeyman.

i would also make a new areas on the cosmology of little fears such as
Broken Toy City (a city of broken toys and missing toys, forgotten by childrens) who are in an internal war between the Raggedy Ones (leaded by raggedy ann, trying to protect the childrens) and The Slayer of The Toymaker (Nod to Puppetland), a puppet who discovered that Child’s parts can be used as Spare parts for toys.

Would also add “Child’s Play” as a new part of the cosmology. that some of the missing childrens during the different eras of Mindkind have landed on Closetland, there they live in a Mad Max-ish/Lord of The Flies community in treehouses and cities made of cardboxes and such.
The army of Childsplay would be some of the original kids from the Childrens Crussade. learning that kids dont age in Closetland but that ancient childs cant go back to the mortal world anymore.
